Glen Depke, Traditional Naturopath By April Martin, NLP and CST Practitioner “I’ll just eat one cookie” you tell yourself, and next thing you know you’ve eaten half the package. “I’m going to get up at 6am to exercise” you say as you set your alarm, but your alarm goes off and you go back to sleep, saying you’ll start tomorrow. You know you should avoid gluten due to health issues but you eat some bread anyways because you just “can’t resist the smell of the fresh rolls” or you binge on gluten free snacks trying to get the same satisfaction you get from the real deal all to no avail. Or………. maybe you eat really well, for a while, exercise consistently…for a while, drop a few pounds even, but eventually you throw in the towel and go back to your old, self-defeating habits. And then unhappy with your body and your health you vow to try again and this time you determine to use more will power, try harder, and the cycle starts again. So why? Why is it so hard, seemingly impossible to change your behavior for good? Because of the self-image that’s programed into your subconscious mind. We all have a self-image programed into our subconscious mind (and there’s a good chance it is very different than the image you hold of yourself in your conscious mind so you are likely no even aware of it at a conscious level) but it is controlling your behavior and thus your results in life. To find out what your self-image is in any area of your life, simply look at your results in that area. Wherever you find results that are not what you want then you have a negative self-image and/or limiting beliefs about yourself in that area which is controlling your thoughts, which in turn control your emotions, which control your behavior, which controls your results. Your results in life are simply a mirror of your subconscious beliefs about yourself and no amount of will power will change your results because your subconscious mind is your autopilot. Here’s how it works. Your subconscious mind operates like the autopilot on a commercial airplane. Lets’ say a plane is going from LA to Honolulu. After takeoff the pilot programs the flight pattern into the planes computer. As the plane is going towards Honolulu it may hit turbulence that knocks it off course but the autopilot will notice the deviation from the norm and course correct, setting it back on target for Honolulu. This can happen many times during the course of the flight but eventually the plane will arrive at its destination, Honolulu, even though it may have been off course for much of the trip, because it is programed for Honolulu. What are you programed for? This is how your mind works. If the self-image that is programed deep in your subconscious mind is that of an overweight person, then you may try to cut out certain foods, eat less, follow a specific diet, exercise more and the like. You may start slimming down and feeling better but if you haven’t changed the programing in your subconscious mind then eventually it will pick up the deviation from the norm and set you back on to the correct course. In plane language, you eat the donut or two, or an entire bag of chips. Or find excuses not to exercise. You mindlessly stuff junk food in your mouth to anesthetize unpleasant emotions or to deal with stress until you sabotage your best laid plans and the weight creeps back. This all happens at a subconscious level because your self-image says you are overweight and the subconscious will do everything in its power to keep congruence between your deepest beliefs and your life experiences. By trying to control what you eat and how much, and trying to force yourself to exercise when you don’t want to, you are actually trying to control the symptoms of your negative self-image. When you change your self-image to one of a healthy, naturally slim person then the behaviors (overeating, eating junk food, and finding excuses not to exercise) change easily and effortlessly, with no struggle, no battle of the will. Your desires change and you find yourself not even thinking about food when you’re not hungry, automatically stopping when your hunger has reduced instead of eating till stuffed, passing up tempting foods because they no longer hold a pull on you. You easily and automatically start acting like a naturally thin person and then the physical results show up, because that’s what your subconscious now believes and it is moving you towards it. So, it’s really easy, change your programming, which in turn changes your thoughts, feelings and behaviors, which of course changes your results. You release the excess weight with no struggle and keep it off permanently because it’s who you are. Your food “issues” are gone! So then, the big question is how do you change your self-image so you can start getting the results you want?
- You can change your self-image in 3 ways:A powerful emotional impact- a friend of mine met her soul mate and fell madly in love after being single for quite a long time. She had really given up hope of finding the love of her life and getting married. She had also yo-yo dieted for years and had not been happy with her body since high school. Finally meeting “the one” created enough of an emotional impact for her that she finally stopped overeating and released the excess weight and has kept it off for many years now. Of course not everyone reacts the same way to the same emotional impact and they are not controllable or predictable.
- Repetition-Saying affirmations over and over again, repetitive visualization, focusing on what you want for long enough will eventually reprogram the subconscious mind because that’s usually how it got programed in the first place (if not by an emotional impact). This helped me stop binge eating. And it took several years.
- Guided Subconscious Technique and Neuro Linguistic Programing (in person or via skype)-The great news is that there is actually a way to quickly change the limiting beliefs and faulty self-image that is stopping you from living the life you want. Using proven and highly effective techniques I can help you tap into the power of your subconscious mind where real and lasting change occurs so that you can easily achieve the results you want and say goodbye to the struggle.
