by Glen Depke, Traditional Naturopath Last week’s article “What is YOUR body telling you?” created quite a stir among many of our readers. As mentioned last week you are likely already “sick and tired” of the conventional medical concept of symptom treatment. After all, waiting for a diagnosed dis-ease state and taking prescription drugs is not what most of us are looking for anymore. It’s even worse when you know something is wrong, or “off” in body, yet your doctor is looking at your blood work and telling you everything is fine. Frustrating, right! Thankfully there is a tool in Traditional Chinese Medicine that provides you the answers your are looking for. This tool is Fingernail & Tongue Analysis. I share signs last week for:
  • Digestive issues
  • Liver congestion
  • Estrogen dominance
  • Poor circulation
  • Insulin resistance
  • Poor mineral uptake
Per your request, this week we will go deeper. Heavy Metal Toxicity Markers A blood test, urinalysis or hair analysis can detect levels of heavy metals in the system. Without these tests, you can look for physical markers that signify heavy metal toxicity, such as the following:
  • Dark protruding veins under the tongue with red/black spots
  • Black- or blue-colored nails
  • Dark/blue lines/discoloration on gum
  • Metallic taste in mouth
If you have the above markers then it means you have heavy metal toxicity. The dark colored nails or gum and the spots under the tongue indicate metal deposits. Red/Black Spots Under Tongue
Blue/Black Nails If you have red or black spots under your tongue (picture above) as well as an earlobe crease (picture below), you have a high risk for heart disease and may have to undergo heart surgery (angioplasty or bypass) eventually. Heavy metals are known to cause inflammation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, vascular damage, plaque, blood clots and more. If this can be controlled, angioplasty and other heart procedures can be avoided. Besides, about 38% of angioplasty procedures have been found to have no benefit at all (Reference: JAMA. July 2011). Furthermore, those who undergo open heart surgery have a 5% chance of death during the operation. Have YOUR body assessed by our world’s leader Dr. Tsu-Tsair Chi. Don’t miss your chance, he is only in our office for 3 days. Dr. Chi is the best of the best and you can have him “read” your body either in person or via pictures and a phone consultation. Click here for more information and to book your appointment. Hyper and Hypothyroid It is not advisable to rely entirely on blood tests to check thyroid function. Sometimes watching for markers and symptoms can determine the disease better than the blood tests. Fingernails that are brittle and easily break can be a sign of a thyroid problem(picture below). Hypothyroid patients can also have a pale and very swollen tongue (picture below). Looking further at symptoms can definitely determine if there is a low thyroid problem. Having 3 of these symptoms can mean hypothyroidism: afternoon fatigue, hair loss, unexplained weight gain, dry skin, cold limbs and memory loss. Moreover, individuals with low thyroid function may also have constipation, slow pulse, a heavy period and occasional depression.   About 80% of people with hyperthyroidism have a narrow and red tongue (picture below). Common characteristics of people with hyperthyroidism include hyperactivity, nervousness, palpitations, unintentional weight loss, sweating and tremors. Graves’ disease patients also share the same symptoms as well as bulging eyes, premature gray hair and, in rare cases, the appearance of lumpy reddish patches and thickening of the skin of the shin. In cases where there is weight gain instead of weight loss, it is due to medication causing hypothyroidism.  These are just a few more samples of the hundreds of different signs you can read on your body.
